Surfaces, 2013-2014

Surfaces is a series of abstract photographs based on reports of ethnic violence published in the news media between 2013 and mid 2014.

In 2013 the Syrian uprising turned into a civil war. Daily reports of violence, mass killings, human rights abuses and the plight of millions of people projected an unbearable landscape.

Disturbed, I started examining any tangible surface within my home intending to capture in photographs the psychological landscapes that were developing within me in relation to these and subsequent reports.

Each photograph is entitled with the name of a place that reported occurrences of ethnic violence during this period.
